There has been a shooting on the campus of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, according to the university’s Web site.
The initial alert of the shooting was issued at 4:29 a.m. In an update, the university said that the incident happened near Stevenson Residence Hall, and that an NIU student was hurt and taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.
The alleged gunman is in custody, according to the site. Police said it appeared to be an isolated incident.
The incident happened at the campus’s Cole Hall at approximately 3:05 p.m. local time. The school placed the campus on lockdown; students and teachers were advised to head to a secure location, take cover, and avoid the scene and all buildings in the vicinity of the area.
